VirtualMIDISynth is a software MIDI synthesizer implemented as a Windows multimedia user driver, accessible as a standard MIDI Out device.
It works on Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8 (both x86 and x64), and is based on the great BASS library from un4seen.
Brief intro
If you are a MIDI/karaoke fan like me, you know that MIDI play quality on Windows systems was not really good out of the box. The bundled "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" MIDI Out device is just... ehm... simple: poor samples, mono sound, no effects (reverb, chorus) support.
On 32bits systems some better alternatives exist, like the well-known YAMAHA XG SoftSynthetizer S-YXG50 and Cakewalk-sfz+ (both unsupported now).
Upgrading to an x64 system was a pain for me: S-YXG50 doesn't work at all, Cakewalk-sfz+ was unusable.

One day Ian Luck (un4seen) added to his BASSMidi library a great feature: the possibility to render a live MIDI stream, including SysEx messages. I quickly realized that, if only I could intercept that MIDI stream and drive it through Ian's library, well, we would have got a great MIDI Synth.
The challenge was to create a good quality synth and keep the end user away from complicated virtual MIDI chains (ever tried VanBasco -> MIDI Yoke/LoopBe1 -> SynthFont chain ?).
User only needs a new virtual MIDI Out device, select it as output on his preferred player settings and... start playing, nothing more.
Here we are, VirtualMIDISynth is the answer: an user mode multimedia x86/x64 driver that works on XP / Vista / 7 (both x86 and x64), implemented as a MIDI Out virtual device.
Main features
- User mode multimedia driver, no reboots, no BSOD
- Directly accessible as MIDI Out device, no need for virtual MIDI cables (like MIDI Yoke, LoopBe1)
- MIDI mixer to set track mute/volume, accessible through systray icon while playing
- Compact size (setup is ~750 KBytes)
- No DLL cluttering, everything is self contained in System32/SysWOW64 subfolder
- Clean installer, won't affect other MIDI devices
- Efficient RAM usage (allows using large SoundFonts, > 1GByte)
- Virtually unlimited polyphony (limited only by CPU)
- Load up to 30 SoundFonts and chain them
- Load all of your soundfonts into list and enable/disable them at your will
- Configure MIDI Mapper default device (this feature is already available in XP, but missing in Vista / 7)
- Multilanguage dialogs (see here for supported langs).
If you like to provide a translation for your native language please get in touch)
What now?
Well, having a better MIDI experience is easy as 1-2-3:

- Download VirtualMIDISynth following the link you find at the bottom of this page and install it (you need administrative privileges)
- Download a SoundFont (you'll find a list of free high quality files below) and add it to VirtualMIDISynt
- Run your favourite MIDI application and configure it to use VirtualMIDISynt or, better, set VirtualMIDISynt as your default MIDI Out device (see screenshot below)
- Donate to CoolSoft ;)
oops, this step was not mandatory, anyway... thanks for doing it!
Maxime Abbey wrote a really detailed documentation on how to setup and configure VirtualMIDISynth; you can find it here.
FAQ
Why are you still playing MIDI files? Have you ever heard of MP3?
Well, first because MIDIs are cool and compact; in a few megabytes you can store thousands songs.
Second, I love Karaoke; VanBasco is one of my preferred MIDI/KAR players.
Third, with MIDI you can silent some tracks, change tempo and pitch easily.
I tried playing a MIDI file on my PC, and it sucks!
I agree, that's why I wrote VirtualMIDISynth!
MIDI only contains "instructions" on what should be played: instruments, notes, their length, power and so on. It's up to the synthesizer to generate sound from these "commands".
The bundled Windows synthesizer, "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth", is the worst.
Which players work with VirtualMIDISynt?
VirtualMIDISynt works with Windows Mediaplayer and MPlayer classic. Since these players cannot change their MIDI out device, you must set VirtualMIDISynt as your default device.
I suggest you to try VanBasco player, which is one of the best MIDI/KAR players around.
How much does it cost?
VirtualMIDISynt is freeware, you can use it as you like.
Why are you releasing it for free?
Because the greatest part of MIDI synthesis is done by BASS libraries from un4seen; I only wrapped them in a Windows driver and gave them an easy to use interface.
That's great, how can I thank you?

Can't assign instruments
Well, you can't ;)
Instruments are defined by the MIDI stream played through the (virtual) device by your MIDI player, so there's no way to change them.
Mixer shows their names just for reference, so you know which instrument you're setting the volume for.
I've got a feature request on my TODO list to "patch" this assignment, forcing a particular instrument instead of another.
beta version hangs the machine
The program is very useful, exact what I was looking for to play midi karaoke.
I use it with Karafun player, the version 1.3.1 works fine, the only inconvenience I need to call mixer manually with each song. Beta version 1.4.0-beta12 has more functionality, but it hangs my PC when Karafun player starts playing midi with video background (kfp video preset). When playing static photo kfp preset, it works fine. I use Win XP, no preload of soundfont file, no h/w mixing. Pls help to make v. 1.4.0-beta workeable!
MichaelC
Can't reproduce this bug on
Can't reproduce this bug on my side, sorry.
I tried a default Karafun setup and Power Ska.kfp preset...
Maybe it's related to a particular preset file?
Please give me further details: soundfont name, kfp filename.
Thanks for your effort, but
Thanks for your effort, but it's no wonder you can not reproduce it, because Power Ska preset is not a video preset. It has static jpg background. Pls use any preset, listed under the title "Video Karaoke Kfp" (it's free for download from Karafun site). For example, try Jellyfish.kfp. It can even be played once, but on second time it freezes the machine to hard reset. It happens at initial moment, when video background file (its avi) refers to video codec.
I use any sond font file, LAV video codec or FFDshow - no matter. I use 1 core CPU, video background loads it to almost 95-100%, but still no hanging with your version 1.3.1.
Further tests - beta13
I downloaded Jellyfish.kfp preset and tested it on Win7-x64 (my development machine) with no issues.
So I tested Karafun on an XP virtual machine, but after setting the video preset, it hanged to 100% CPU; I can only hard reset it to get control back.
VirtualMIDISynth 1.4 automatically raises process priority to HIGH to achieve better (and smooth) play. The worst is that a 95%+ CPU process with HIGH priority makes the machine unresponsive.
Now in beta13 the process priority raising is a configurable option (enabled by default, since I had no issues with that, except with Karafun video backgrounds on XP).
On my test XP VM (and process priority raising disabled) Karafun still hangs, but the machine remains responsive, so I was able to terminate Karafun with task manager.
Please try it (disabling the new option) and let me know ASAP.
Great, now it's fixed!
Great, now it's fixed! Everything works fine with beta 13.
Actually, it is Karafun who increased CPU load while playing video in their current version. Previous version 1.18 did not utilize CPU that much, but it is incompatible with BASSMidi 2.4...
Thank you, wish you to go on and on with this great software.
Thanks for your quick
Thanks for your quick feedback, I'm happy it works!
I think that the new "raise process priority" option should stay enabled by default, because it's the best choice for most users.
Only Karafun users must disable it, and only if (1) using XP and (2) using a video preset; only this particular environment make the PC hang to 100% CPU.
Win7 users are safe, even with video preset enabled.
> Actually, it is Karafun who increased CPU load while playing video in their current version.
Why don't you send them a bug report, maybe linking this thread.
> Previous version 1.18 did not utilize CPU that much, but it is incompatible with BASSMidi 2.4...
Version 2.x of VirtualMIDISynth will solve all of these compatibility issues (see previous comments for architectural details), but that's far away from complete...
Beta13 released
This will be the latest, no kidding.
It contains latest fixes on message buffer and a new option to disable process priority raise.
I hope to release final on tomorrow.
Stable 1.4.0?
I'm not quite clear if my midi device is 32 or 64 bit, but i'm using a 64-bit windows. If that means 64-bit devices, i'll have to use 1.4.0., but it's in beta. when wil the stable come out?
MIDI player
You have to look at your MIDI player, the software you use to play your mid/kar files.
If it's a 32bit version (regardless your OS bitness), like VanBasco, then you're ok with 1.3.1; otherwise 1.4.0 final is going to be released in a few hours...
Version 1.4.0 finally released
Version 1.4.0 was finally released.
It was a long run (1.3.1 was released on Dec-2011) but this version has a lot of new features and improvements.
Thanks to all the users that helped me testing a long list of betas, providing feedback and help.
Enjoy VirtualMIDISynth 1.4 !
Awesome!
Man you are god send i've been searching for this for years. i'm close to giving up. and then i found this. This is a big soulution especially for us playing on stage live. keep it up bro. I'll share this to my friends (Musicians) for my contribution. god bless.

Hi,
Hi,
It looks like there a bug in the download link process for 1.4.0, it says :

Help on Guitar Pro
You mean version 1.4.0, right?
I don't know Guitar Pro, could you please give me some hints on where to find it (website, links, ...).
Does it have a demo/trial version to test?
Hello,
Hello,
Guitar pro is a tablature editor: you can find it here: http://www.guitar-pro.com/en/index.php?pg=home and yes there's a demo.
I'm not using it myself, I just saw you got no answer from the previous post.
If it can help. I think it uses its own sound generator so that's pehaps the problem too.
Ben
Thanks, I'll give it a look
Thanks, I'll give it a look ASAP.
Just tried the demo version
Just tried the demo version of Guitar Pro 6 on Win7-x64 and it works with VirtualMIDISynth.
Since I'm not an experienced user, I loaded an installed sample tablature, set VirtualMIDISynth as output device under Sound --> Audio settings and played it.
@Serosis: please give further info such as OS version, Soundfont used, system info (CPU, RAM), ...
Also try to disable "Increase process priority" option into VirtualMIDISynth configurator.
Win7 x64
Win7 x64
Soundfont used is a mixture of sYnerGiGS and MagicSF
AMD Athlon II X2 720 @ 3.42 GHz
4 Gigs RAM
Did what you said with the same results.
Some sounds playback but are truncated and some don't playback at all.
Some more tests...
When you have no sound at all, do you see any activity on MIDI Mixer? I mean the vu-meter bar near the master knob.
Could you also please test it with a full GM SF2 like Chorium_RevA or FluidR3_GM (see above for links)?
Thank you for this new version
Hi,
I just wanted to drop a big thank you for this new version and for bringing the virtual midi synth to the community. It works very well on my systems and i can now forget all the "virtual midi cable to vst host" configs. Nice!
I haven't used a lot of sf2 since my soundblaster AWE32 time, that's a while. Is there somewhere specs of the midi info (CC, ...) supported by your drivers? I would like to know how if can alter some parameters like chorus speed, attack time, ...
and can you explain a bit better the chaining? What's the purpose?
By the way the last 1.4 version is is now understood by noatikl (www.intermorphic.com) a generative music program. The previous driver didn't appeared in the midi output list.
Again, nice work, thanks. I'm now investigating sample robot (http://www.samplerobot.com) to transfer some vst and real synth to sf2. Any chance you'll support other format in the future? sfz? vsti hosting ;=)
Greetings from Belgium,
Ben
Thanks for your positive
Thanks for your positive comment, I'm glad you like my work.
VirtualMIDISynth uses BASSMIDI.dll (from un4seen.com) as MIDI rendering engine, so refer to it for the specs.
BASSMIDIDRV is a driver similar to VirtualMIDISynth and uses the same library.
Rich Nagel published this list of supported messages: http://www.mudlord.info/bassmididrv/BASSMIDI_Driver_MIDI_Implementation_Chart.htm. It will apply to VirtualMIDISynth too.
As for the "soundfont chain", think it like an ordered list where the last loaded SF wins.
For normal use you could load a single (your preferred) soundfont and use it for all instruments.
But some users don't like some instruments contained in a SF2, so they can change it with (better) others.
Suppose you configure a full GeneralMIDI soundfont at first position (A.SF2), then a small SF containing only your preferred Acoustic Grand Piano samples at second (B.SF2).
Now VirtualMIDISynth will use A.SF2 for all instruments except for Acoustic Grand Piano which will be rendered from B.SF.
This chain could contain up to 10 items.
This is a very useful program
This is a very useful program.
Great thanks to you!:))
I'm glad you like it.
I'm glad you like it.
Thanks for your support ;)
"Interesting" Behavior
I just installed the VirtualMidiSynth and ran the configurator and brought up my Midi player (NoteWorthy Player) and damn! Everything sounds great! This thing is a 20x improvement over the sound of the GS Wave Synth. Thanks!
Now, here is the "Interesting" part. Since the test went well, I wanted to actually use it with my DAW. I use Reaper for recording and use Midi drum loops as background. When I loaded the midi file and tried to select the hardware to route it to, Reaper indicates "No MIDI Hardware" Not even the GS Synth! If I go back into the CoolSoft configurator and change the midi mapper config back to the GS Synth, Reaper shows my USB Midi out and the GS Synth again but doesn't show the CoolSoft as an option. If I change the CoolSoft configurator back to the VMS, Reaper once again shows no hardware available. I'm assuming this is an x64/x32 compatibility issue but I could be wrong.
I have just tried both the x32 and the x64 versions of reaper and they both behave the same way.
I am running Windows 7 with all the latest patches, a Core i7 IvyBridge CPU with 16gb of Ram, Behringer Low Latency USB Interface.
Help!!! I love the sound of this thing but Reaper doesn't seem to like it!
BTW Reaper is free to try for 30 days so testing should be easy. http://www.reaper.fm/download.php
Thanks for your help.
