VirtualMIDISynth is a software MIDI synthesizer implemented as a Windows multimedia user driver, accessible as a standard MIDI Out device.
It works on Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8 (both x86 and x64), and is based on the great BASS library from un4seen.
Brief intro
If you are a MIDI/karaoke fan like me, you know that MIDI play quality on Windows systems was not really good out of the box. The bundled "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" MIDI Out device is just... ehm... simple: poor samples, mono sound, no effects (reverb, chorus) support.
On 32bits systems some better alternatives exist, like the well-known YAMAHA XG SoftSynthetizer S-YXG50 and Cakewalk-sfz+ (both unsupported now).
Upgrading to an x64 system was a pain for me: S-YXG50 doesn't work at all, Cakewalk-sfz+ was unusable.

One day Ian Luck (un4seen) added to his BASSMidi library a great feature: the possibility to render a live MIDI stream, including SysEx messages. I quickly realized that, if only I could intercept that MIDI stream and drive it through Ian's library, well, we would have got a great MIDI Synth.
The challenge was to create a good quality synth and keep the end user away from complicated virtual MIDI chains (ever tried VanBasco -> MIDI Yoke/LoopBe1 -> SynthFont chain ?).
User only needs a new virtual MIDI Out device, select it as output on his preferred player settings and... start playing, nothing more.
Here we are, VirtualMIDISynth is the answer: an user mode multimedia x86/x64 driver that works on XP / Vista / 7 (both x86 and x64), implemented as a MIDI Out virtual device.
Main features
- User mode multimedia driver, no reboots, no BSOD
- Directly accessible as MIDI Out device, no need for virtual MIDI cables (like MIDI Yoke, LoopBe1)
- MIDI mixer to set track mute/volume, accessible through systray icon while playing
- Compact size (setup is ~750 KBytes)
- No DLL cluttering, everything is self contained in System32/SysWOW64 subfolder
- Clean installer, won't affect other MIDI devices
- Efficient RAM usage (allows using large SoundFonts, > 1GByte)
- Virtually unlimited polyphony (limited only by CPU)
- Load up to 30 SoundFonts and chain them
- Load all of your soundfonts into list and enable/disable them at your will
- Configure MIDI Mapper default device (this feature is already available in XP, but missing in Vista / 7)
- Multilanguage dialogs (see here for supported langs).
If you like to provide a translation for your native language please get in touch)
What now?
Well, having a better MIDI experience is easy as 1-2-3:

- Download VirtualMIDISynth following the link you find at the bottom of this page and install it (you need administrative privileges)
- Download a SoundFont (you'll find a list of free high quality files below) and add it to VirtualMIDISynt
- Run your favourite MIDI application and configure it to use VirtualMIDISynt or, better, set VirtualMIDISynt as your default MIDI Out device (see screenshot below)
- Donate to CoolSoft ;)
oops, this step was not mandatory, anyway... thanks for doing it!
Maxime Abbey wrote a really detailed documentation on how to setup and configure VirtualMIDISynth; you can find it here.
FAQ
Why are you still playing MIDI files? Have you ever heard of MP3?
Well, first because MIDIs are cool and compact; in a few megabytes you can store thousands songs.
Second, I love Karaoke; VanBasco is one of my preferred MIDI/KAR players.
Third, with MIDI you can silent some tracks, change tempo and pitch easily.
I tried playing a MIDI file on my PC, and it sucks!
I agree, that's why I wrote VirtualMIDISynth!
MIDI only contains "instructions" on what should be played: instruments, notes, their length, power and so on. It's up to the synthesizer to generate sound from these "commands".
The bundled Windows synthesizer, "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth", is the worst.
Which players work with VirtualMIDISynt?
VirtualMIDISynt works with Windows Mediaplayer and MPlayer classic. Since these players cannot change their MIDI out device, you must set VirtualMIDISynt as your default device.
I suggest you to try VanBasco player, which is one of the best MIDI/KAR players around.
How much does it cost?
VirtualMIDISynt is freeware, you can use it as you like.
Why are you releasing it for free?
Because the greatest part of MIDI synthesis is done by BASS libraries from un4seen; I only wrapped them in a Windows driver and gave them an easy to use interface.
That's great, how can I thank you?

Volume
I could be wrong on this - I haven't studied the ENTIRE spec. - but as I understand it, there actually aren't any global volume commands. Each note has its own velocity and aftertouch and that's it. I think the way that the faders work now is that every velocity and aftertouch gets scaled by the fader value before it gets to the synth.
To correct low volume, perhaps the unity gain position could be 50% or 70% (sqrt(2) if you want to get fancy) of the way up instead of the top?
I don't know if the MIDI data itself is actually visible to the UI or not. If it is, it should be easy to implement both pre- and post-fade meters (maybe one meter per channel that's switchable) based entirely on velocities and aftertouches. If it's not, then you're kind-of up a creek, if you know what I mean. I like the idea, though.
This might be getting out of hand at this point, but what if you had an MRU list of MIDI files and their final settings? If you play one again that's in the list, all the settings are preloaded as they were when that file finished playing the last time.
Volume adjustment on BASS
Volume adjustment on BASS library is done on the "analog" side, not on MIDI messages. So a gain can be applied even if the channel is already set to 128.
As for the level meter on each track, it will be a CPU intensive task without being really useful.
I agree with Ian Luck from un4seen (BASS creator) on this.
But I agree on having a kind of "activity indicator" on each channel, useful for debugging purposes and also on live usage to find out which track is actually playing.
MRU si not really possible: VMS is a (virtual) device, so it has no knowledge about the file you're playing; that's up to your player.
It only receives a MIDI stream.
There are control changes (CC
There are control changes (CC) for many track parameters as volume(7), expresiion(11), pan(10), reverb(91), chorus(93), etc. Theese control changes affect all notes in the track, so if you set the track volume to 0 using the corresponding CC 7, it doesn't matter the note velocities, they will not sound at all.
In fact the final volume of the notes is a combination of note velocity value, track volume value and track experssion value.
Volume
Hi Aaron!
In fact there are many midi control change messages afecting to an entire channel, as volume CC#7, pan CC#10, expression CC#11, reverb CC#91, chorus CC#93, etc. For a complete list, see
http://en.wikiaudio.org/MIDI:Control_change_message_list
So note final volume is a function of note velocity, channel volume and channel expression. So even if note velocity is 128, if channel volume is 0, you will not hear it.
Theese messages are usually used to easily sequence fade in and fade out effects, and also it is the only way to change the volume of a note once it is being played, as you can do in real instruments as an organ, violin, accordion, etc.
I stand corrected
Thanks Alberto for pointing that out. Pretty much all of my work with MIDI has been through a graphical editing program or with MIDI Show Control messages, which are a specific type of Real-time System Exlusive (sysex) message.
I've written a program in C#.NET that generates MIDI files with Show Control messages that are designed for the lighting controller that I'm building. The idea there is that you can insert those MIDI files as "soundtracks" into a media-only script, and thus automate the lights (and anything else that happens to be listening) as part of the show. This is why I posted my other comments about getting MIDI out of Windows 7. You can look at those for more details.
At the risk of being nit-picky, I would like to point out that the maximum value in MIDI is actually 127, not 128. Out of each byte, the most significant bit is not used for data, but to synchronize the receiver(s) at the start of every command. When it's on, the remaining 7 bits are a command code; when it's off, the remaining 7 bits are data to be interpreted according to the last command code received. 0b01111111 = 127, 0b10000000 = 128 = Note Off for channel 0: the specific note to stop sounding is determined by the following byte.
soundfont chain
Hi, at first thank you for your efforts, VirtualMIDISynth looks like great piece of software ;)
I would like to ask you for help: I'm a new in MIDI and can't find out how the soundfont chain works ... Could I ask you for explanation?
I have 3 soundfonts loaded (all is checked in the list) and I have assumed that the output sound is mixed from all three soundfonts, but I can't hear it as tripled, just the last one.
I'm using Sonar X1 LE and Coolsoft is my default MIDi output.
Thanks for answer
Soundfont chain
Thanks for your kind words.
See here for an explanation of how soundfonts chain works.
Soundfont chain
Perfect explanation, that's exactly what I need to know, thank you!
New version released
Version 1.6.2 has been released.
It adds japanese language translation; driver and configurator are unchanged, so no need to download them again if you're not going to use this language.
Good job!
A big thank you for your very nice freeware. The driver works perfectly, and I was so glad when I saw I could reduce the length (size) of the "additional output buffer", to eliminate MIDI playback latency. Thanks to you, now, I can use my M-Audio KeyStudio USB keyboard on my "modern" computers and hear the synthesized sounds instantly. Goodbye Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, goodbye latency, and good riddance! It was so absurd I had to use an old SBlaster Live PCI card on a 2004 computer to avoid latency (Microsoft Synth has a systematic latency (delay) of more than 100 ms, that was ridiculous).
I will get more familiar with your great driver&freeware, and soon I may visit your website again to donate something. I encourage any MIDI-nostalgic guy to download your freeware... now!
Thanks again!
Marc.
Thanks for your kind words ;)

Info saltellamenti/balbuzia ultima versione...
Ciao ;o)
Se installi l'ultima versione controlla i parametri "additional output buffer" e "preload the whole soundfont".
Grazie ancora e buon lavoro !
Andrea
The more the better, come
The more the better, come dicono gli inglesi ;)
Cmq ti tengo aggiornato... graze 1000 !!!
Lasciala pure disabilitata.
M-Audio Keystudio setup ?
Hello There,
Seeing Marc's comment about playing realtime with the midi keyboard through VirtualMIDISynth, can you explain how you did setup this solution in terms of drivers and software.
My idea is to find a very simple setup for playing realtime on the keyboard and easily selecting which GM/GS instrument to output. Optionally recording the played notes would be nice too.
Thanks,
I suppose he's using MIDIOX
I suppose he's using MIDIOX to map the MIDI-IN (the keyboard) to the MIDI-OUT device (VirtualMIDISynth).
MIDIOX
Thanks coolsoft for the tip. I'll look into this solution.
WOW- this works better than ASIO !
No second plug-in to configure each time and very low latency. Honestly this is hard to believe and I am lucky to have found this. Highly recommended and you will be receiving a donation! As an FYI to my ears the best GM soundfont I have found and tested many many times is SynergiGS (do not think it is being sold any longer). Thanks!
Thanks for your words, really
Thanks for your words, really appreciated.
Never heard about SynergiGS, please give me further info (link, license details, ...) and I'll add it to my suggestions.
SynergiGS
The gent was Darrell Marjoram from the UK but his darrell.net site appears defunct. It is a GS set but I have no issues with playing it in your synth setup. PS- made a donation tonight--- you deserve it!
Soundfont link
If you find any other site hosting that file please let me know and I'll link it.
PS: thanks for your support, really appreciated ;)
Question...
Hello, I have several PC games that use midi, and one I've been playing, Final Fantasy 7, has an issue with sound being cut during movie scenes due to there not being a separate volume control in Windows 7 for general midi. It's not a bug within Windows or the game, just an unexpected quirk of trying to play a game from 1998 on win7.
The solution, I discovered, was to find a replacement for the general midi synth used by Win7 and a quick google returned VirtualMidiSynth near the top. I downloaded and installed the program along with the ChoriumRevA soundfont, and I fired up FF7 and I must say I am deeply impressed. Not only did it fix the disappearing cut-scene sounds, but the overal sound quality has gone up dramatically. Deep rich tones, with reverb and 3D positional effects that are fantastic. (I play with headphones)
However, I have a problem I am hoping to get help solving. Upon choosing to `Quit`the game the player is presented with a small screen asking if you are sure with a Yes or No selection. Upon choosing Yes the game now freezes. This issue is testable and continously repeatable; use Win7 general midi, no hang on game exit, use VirtualmidiSynth, game hangs on game exit.
Otherwise I notice no performance issues in game; no slow downs in any aspect of the game and never a crash while simply playing the game. Just at the single point of trying to exit the program.
Question 2: The keyboard short cuts for the midi mixer, are they 'active' when the game is using VirtualMidiSynth for midi output? These old games use the keyboard for controls so there may be a conflict if that is the case. If that is the case, can I disable the shortcuts?
Thanks for any help you can provide,
jrevelater
Thanks for your kind words ;)
Thanks for your kind words ;)
Q1: I don't have a copy of Final Fantasy 7 to test so it's really difficult for me to reproduce that bug.
Is there a demo/trial still around? (being a '90 game I don't think so)...
Q2: to disable shortcut, click into shortcut selector box and press DEL on your keyboard; after that you'll read <NONE> into the box and shortcut will be disabled.
Master volume is too quiet
Hello there,
This is precisely what I was looking for after finally having to give up the Awe32/64/Audigy line of creative cards, which have always had awesome MIDI. The only issue I've run into so far is that the final output is very quiet. It's audible, but the is far quieter than all the remaining system sounds. I already have the virtualmidisynth mixer at max volume.
In future versions, would you please consider amplifying the output?
Never heard about it, need further info
Hi Squish, I've neved received feedbacks about VMS volume being quiet.
I'd like to further investigate on it before implementing your request.
Could you please follow this checklist and provide the required info?
If yes, the VMS is outputting the audio at its maximum, so the issue has to be found elsewhere.
On Vista/7 the Mixer is per-process: please open the full Audio Mixer (right click on volume icon and select "Open mixer") and set all the sliders to the max.
Not working in Anvil Studio
Dear friends, I have tried to choose Coolsoft as the synthesizer in Anvil Studio http://www.anvilstudio.com/ but it does not even appear in the options. Any comments for this? Thanks
Just tried the latest free
Just tried the latest free version 2012.12.05 and it works on my test machine:
Anvil Studio was installed with default settings (no ASIO, no VST).
