Re: "No soundfont loaded/enabled" message

I see that MegaMid is a really old software, it's still 16bit (I found version 1.66)!
It runs undex WinXP (32bit) in emulated mode; that's why BASS libraries (used by VMS) can't be properly loaded.

You could try the new 2.x version of VirtualMIDISynth that entered the beta stage on yesterday.
On this version the driver is much more lightweight and the BASS libraries are not loaded into MIDI program space anymore.

Hope it could help...

Re: "No soundfont loaded/enabled" message

You know, I feel kind of stupid right now.

Stupid for not doing the obvious thing and testing VMS with another midi player, thus finding out that only the player I normally use produces that problem. All other programs, be it players like the Windows Media Player or old games work just fine.

The midi player that produces the problem is a really old one from 1999 called "MegaMid" which I only use because it lets me change the instruments while playing. Hmm... do you know another free midi player where that is possible? Or do you have any idea how only this one player could produce that problem? Maybe it has to do with the new BASS library? I have noticed slight changes in how some of the instruments sound.

Re: "No soundfont loaded/enabled" message

Description of error 2 is:

BASS_ERROR_FILEOPEN: The file could not be opened.

This means that VMS can't open/access the requested file (*.sf2) because of access rights, path name too long, filename with strange chars, ...
File format error has another code, so this is not the case.

Try to move your sf2 file to, i.e., C:\ folder and retry.

Otherwise post the content of VirtualMIDISynth configuration file (C:\Windows\System32\VirtualMIDISynth\VirtualMIDISynth.conf) here...

Re: "No soundfont loaded/enabled" message

Oh, and the soundfonts I use are all sf2 files. Also, the computer I use VMS on still runs on Windows XP 32-bit.

Re: "No soundfont loaded/enabled" message

The message that is shown now says:

Error 2 while loading soundfont

(directly behind that message the file path is shown in those arrow-like brackets. But it won't show in this forum (at least in the "Anteprima"))

This error occurs regardless of the soundfont I try to load and regardless of where it is stored. Also I tested it with my antivirus software deactivated and it still didn't work.

Re: "No soundfont loaded/enabled" message

That message is shown when one or more soundfonts failed to load, maybe because of an unsupported format or compression.
Another cause coud be that you store your soundfont to an unaccessible folder, maybe protected by your antivirus.

Sadly VMS language file is missing the translation for that message, that's why you don't see a detailed error message that could quickly give a fix.

This will be fixed in next release but here you are the updated file; you can update it manually:

  • download the attached 1033.zip archive to a proper location (i.e. your Desktop), then extract the contained 1033.lang file
  • move that .lang file to C:\Windows\SysWOW64\VirtualMIDISynth\lang folder (or C:\Windows\SysWOW64\VirtualMIDISynth\lang on x86 systems)
NOTE: do not extract it straight to destination folder, UAC won't allow it to be saved there and you'll end up with your old file untouched.
  • restart VirtualMIDISynth and select English language

Now you should receive a detailed error message; please post it here.

Re: "No soundfont loaded/enabled" message

Hello,
I have the same problem but there is another message box I get before the one shown in the first post. It says:

drv.error.sf_load

I get that message box for every soundfont that should be loaded.
No solutions posted here have any effect.
Version 1.10.1 was the last one I used and it worked fine.

Maybe you have some security software preventing you to access current SF2 folder.

Open file C:\Windows\System32\VirtualMIDISynth\VirtualMIDISynth.conf (or C:\Windows\System32\VirtualMIDISynth\VirtualMIDISynth.conf) and look at the [SoundFonts] section with some items in it named sf1, sf2, ...
Disabled items start with an *.
Check if there's at least one enabled item there.
