Re: ecw format?

You could always attempt converting them. The results will be less than spectacular though.

Re: ecw format?

You could try to capture game MIDI with a chain like LoopBe1 + MidiOX.
Connect the game output to LoopBe1 and this to the input of MidiOX.

It should work, but I don't have any experience on it.

Well, I really don't know if it could be done, but the first issue that comes to my mind is that the soundmodule should be considered as "copyrighted material".
Roland people are surely against its extraction and distribution...

Sorry, I really don't know how to help on this.

Mm... Didn't looked at this that way. You right, it sure is copyrighted. I just wanted to hear how the GM2 of the Integra 7 sounds with midi based games first, and if it'd be to my liking and really worth it then I'd probably purchase the unit. As it also has some great SuperNatural sounds that I could use with my digital piano. But I guess that the best choice to test the GM2 sounds would be to copy some ripped midi files from games I wish to hear to a USB thumb-drive and to take it to a store that has the unit on display and play them.

Re: ecw format?

@coolsoft: I had an interesting thought, but don't have the knowledge to tell whether it's possible or not:

I heard that Roland's Integra 7 has a great General Midi (GM2) sounds in it and wondered how it will sound in good old midi-based DOS games. But it's too expensive to purchase just for using as a sound generator for midi in games, as it's first a sound sampler musician use. The GM is just an extra feature that comes with it. Now, I'm using the Roland (Edirol) GM2 Hyper Canvas VST which I once set as the host to play midi files in Windows. It can be set with loopMIDI & VSTHost tools. Someone uploaded a guide on YouTube to configuring it if anyone wants to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWIzlpUQe3Q

The thing is, I'm not sure if the Integra 7 GM2 sound module sounds alike to the Roland (Edirol) Hyper Canvas GM2 and really like to compare them side-by-side. But for that I should first have the Integra 7 in hand - OR - to have its GM2 sound module as a SoundFont. :) So my question is, could the GM2 sound module be extracted from the Integra 7 and wrapped as a SoundFont to use with the VirtualMIDISynth?

on my old audioPCI (an older version of the vibra128 chipset) i recall any midi track that panned or changed volume in realtime would stop playing after the 1st note

Re: ecw format?

Spent a few hours setting up Windows 98 so I could hear the ECW wavesets again. :P

Unfortunately, there is still the issue with missing notes which also happened on the VIBRA128 card I used years ago. For example, songs from DOOM such as E1M2, E1M8, and E2M8, have many notes that don't play. I wonder what the cause of it is, and if Creative ever released a driver that fixed it...

Extended Grabbag from Duke 3D recorded with the 3 wavesets:
https://youtu.be/8mIO3_re5po

The 2 MB ECW's electric guitars sound like violins to be honest. The 4 and 8 MB ECWs' electric guitars are more realistic, but tend to be softer.

I also recorded the DOOM 2 Intro again, this time with reverb (I didn't use reverb when I recorded the music on the VIBRA128):
* 2 MB ECW - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/c8ae90nagguu4xx/DOOM%202%20-%20Intro...
* 8 MB ECW - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/vdlmiov7ggjb9b7/DOOM%202%20-%20Intro...

As can be heard in the 2nd of the 2 recordings, the 8/4 MB ECWs' instruments are better and "cooler" sounding than the 2 MB ECW's instruments (especially the synthy stuff). Unfortunately, the "boring" style of Synth Strings (in the 2 MB ECW recording) are what most soundfonts use.

Re: ecw format?

Yes I'm familiar with John Engelmann's page. But thanks @TheUltimateDoomer666 for the info anyway. :)

@coolsoft: I'm not sure what you suggested me to post on un4seen. The link to John Engelmann's page or to this thread of ours?
