Default device auto-update doesn't work when sometimes NO audio device is present

My configuration is as shown in Untitled.png. I disabled the internal speaker of my laptop because I don't want my roommates to hear what I was listening to when the headphones accidentally disconnect.

Before 2.3, when the headphones are removed, VMS throws an error.

With 2.3, it no longer throws errors, but when I reconnect the headphones, no sound comes out, and the VU meter in the mixer showed no levels, but the channel indicators were flashing as they should.
