Re: VMS 2.5.4 Reverb bug

I just tried a clean install of VirtualMIDISynth 2.13.4, and still, no matter if you set the Max Reverb value to allow up to the full amount at 127 it is limited to the default value of 64.

I'm still using v2.10.1 as that is the last version the reverb worked fully.

Re: VMS 2.5.4 Reverb bug

I just updated VMS to 2.11.2, clean install. Although the reverb does sound better, it's still not fixed properly. If someone else can confirm, the instruments playing have reverb in them but they end abruptly (sound stops dead), with only a smaller reverb tail after sound on the end.

You can use my project as sample on that forum... And my explications if you want :) I don't want to start new thread elsewhere

I'm not a musician so my ear can't immediately get the difference between the various versions, but Audacity waveform shows it perfectly.

Thanks for the reply... If you hear with attention you hear the difference of reverb starting from 2.10.2.. There are also differences if you select same audio region beetween the versions, and then do "show spectrum" in audacity, you will se that, in the high frequency area, the 2.6.0 has peaks with smooth curves, instead the peaks of 2.10.1 peaks are more angular, and maybe better. The 2.10.2 and 2.11 tends to comprime peaks, if you seee with attention and hear the peaks...

The changelog between BASSMIDI 2.4.12 and 2.4.13 contains something related to reverb:

2.4.13 - 16/9/2020
------------------
...
* Reverb level modification
	BASS_ATTRIB_MIDI_REVERB (BASS_ChannelSetAttribute option)
...

That new BASS_ATTRIB_MIDI_REVERB setting that allows configuring an additional reverb effect level.

This attribute is applied on top of the MIDI_EVENT_REVERB_LEVEL event value; the final reverb level is the product of both.

Since VMS don't use that new parameter, I've supposed its default should make it work as before.
Need to further investigate.

I'd start a thread on BASS forum but, since I need a sample to help Ian understand the request and you've done a perfect one, let me know if you want to start that thread by yourself (and post the link back here so I can follow it)...

Meanwhile you can check if your problem is really related to Bass/Bassmidi libraries or not.

In C:\Program Files\VirtualMIDISynth you can find bass.dll and bassmidi.dll. You can copy them from your properly working 2.6 version and paste them temporarily somewhere. Then install newest VMS and overwrite the new Bass related libraries in VirtualMIDISynth folder with the previously saved ones.

Then check if the problem is solved by the older libraries or not.

Thans for suggestion, I already know that and I already thought about it.. Maybe I will try, yes

Re: VMS 2.5.4 Reverb bug

I can confirm the bad reverb and also bad sound expression in 2.10.2 and 2.11.. I had 2.6.0 for all this time, I never updated because it was cool the 2.6.0, after the reverb bug solved time ago.. After long time, today I decided to upgrade to last version 2.11, and bad, the reverb was limited and the waveforms curves changed a lot in registration compared to 2.6 (or better than 2.6, the 2.10.1 tried after), so then I tried 2.10.2 and also the reverb was limited and waveforms changed like 2.11, bad... I then tried 2.10.1 and voila... The reverb was perfect, better than 2.6 and the waveforms curves are like 2.6, rather better than 2.6... I think that if the most change in 2.10.2 is bassmidi, this bassmidi update has to be for the moment ignored, in my opinion and revert back to 2.10.1 settings e libraries...

I attach proff link with my audacity project, in the project there are 4 tracks registered from same midi, in alignment, registered at "48000hz best quality (slowest)" in audacity from VMS 2.6, 2.10.1, 2.10.2 and 2.11 .... And you can see al the differences I talked about earlier.  Simply download the rar, extract all the files in same folder, and then open the ".aup" file, anc Audacity will open automatically...
Everything was played and registered with same settings in Virtual Midi, nothing touched.. And same midi...

Nothing changed in VMS (2.10.1-->2.10.2) about reverb management but it changed the bundled BASSMIDI library, updated from 2.4.12-->2.4.13.
Will have a look at its changelog to check if something changed on that side...

Re: VMS 2.5.4 Reverb bug

After a clean install of VMS 2.10.2 reverb seemed to be limited, like perhaps it stayed at default maximum of 64, despite my setting it to allow 127. I reverted back to 2.10.1, and it works as expected again.

(I didn't know whether to start a new thread or not).
