Is this something you've seen on an existing product?
I mean, is there any synth out there that already implements this idea?
"Auto polyphony" is a smart name, but what should it do behind the scenes?
Reduce max-notes when a lot of them are coming in in a short time?
Intel Core i3 could show its limits with black MIDIs.
Have you tried to decrease the "Maximum notes..." parameter into "Advanced" configuration tab down to 100?

This exact feature already exists as an option in Timidity++, and works pretty well to a certain extent. I'd personally worry a bit more about fixing any unneeded excessive CPU before adding an "auto voice" feature.
