Using VirtualMIDISynth with DosBOX or ScummVM

I've been waiting to hear who the 2-4MB GM/GS soundpatches from the old MS-DOS6.22 games compare to the larger 900MB - 1GB soundfonts.

Anyone know if this is doable, or am I barking up the wrong tree.
Roland and Yamaha used to sell VSynth versions of their GS and XG wavetable units, but they've stopped support for those at WinXP.
None wil work on Win7-64bit.
