VirtualMidiSynth in VirtualBox

Hi there,

Running Win98Se through VirtualBox where MidiOx reports the midi port for output as in-use. "MM337: the specified midi device is already in use". In this case it's Windows Direct Sound on the host channelled through SoundBlaster 16 in guest seen as a "MIDI for Creative Stereo Music Synthesier". The wav sounds work.

Exiting VirtualMidiSynth doesn't appear to clear the issue- although haven't tried an uninstall/restart to verify.

Successfully updated the SE, but attempts to update the SB drivers didn't work. Perhaps a soundcard is better than just the on-board chip in any case. :)

Thanks for reading.

If it's of any help at all here's a snippet from the VirtualBox logs:

It sure doesn't look all that very friendly. :p

Thanks again.

Re: VirtualMidiSynth in VirtualBox

This week I should be able to get back working on VMS.
Will have a look, thanks for the detailed report ;)

Re: VirtualMidiSynth in VirtualBox

Thanks. :)

Well there are revelations: After uninstalling VMSynth and installing an SB-Z card, there is still no midi in the Win98 Virtual Box! The wav files play beautifully. Going to hit the Creative forums to determine which of the drivers to use0 if any. Obviously some kind of OS issue- the AC97 WDM returns a 5009 on install- tried others. Definitely not a VirtualMidiSynth issue, sorry.

I love VirtualBox but I had lot of issues running Win98 within it (not supported, no extensions, no official video drivers and such).
If you need to virtualize Win98 then the free VMware should be a better choice; you could try the free VMware Player + a free config editor to generate your VM config file.
