2.1.0 Reverb bug

After installing VMS 2.1.0 on my laptop, the reverb settings do not initially work. I have set reverb at 127 in the options, but the sound is very flat when played back. So I change the reverb to a low setting like 5 and apply it. Then I change it back to 127 and it works fine after this. But 2.1.0 works fine on my desktop, and 2.0.1 is fine on my laptop too.

(My previous bug report on channel volume levels appears to have been fixed).

Was this an upgrade from 2.0.1 or a clean install?
And also, it happened only at first run then fixed after your settings change, right?

Re: 2.1.0 Reverb bug

It was an update from 2.0.1, and although the problem seems fixed after changing the settings, even after exiting and restarting the program, after a reboot the problem is the same.

I thought it was just on my laptop, but I've noticed it is actually happening on my desktop as well.

After reading your post I tried a clean install and it worked ok after changing the default settings for reverb and chrous from 64 to 127. I rebooted, and it still seemed ok, so maybe the clean install helped, but I was sure it was ok for a while after the update (?). Debug reports from my desktop after update, and clean install.

Your config files seems ok, so it's still a mistery to me why it happened the first time.
I'll keep an eye on this thread, feel free to post an update if the issues comes back again.

Re: 2.1.0 Reverb bug

For now I'm unable to comment further on this problem as I've had to revert back to v2.0.1; whilst working on and testing my soundfont, I noticed a lot of glitches and error in the playback, and system slow down. When I checked Task Manager, although my soundfont is around 1.7Gb, VMS was using over 7Gb of RAM! So I closed VMS, and loaded it back up again, this time watching Task Manager. Sure enough, as the soundfont loaded in fully and was usable, VMS's memory useage continued to gradually climb well over the size of the soundfont.

No idea what is causing that, but now I'm back on the previous version it doesn't happen.

Re: 2.1.0 Reverb bug

I just tried a clean install of 2.2.0 and both problems still exist.

Watching Task Manager, the memory useage rises everytime another midi file is played. It still sort of happens in 2.0.1 but the memory useage also drops on it's own after loading various midi files.

I just tried a clean install of 2.2.1 and the memory useage and delay errors are still present for me.

Re: 2.1.0 Reverb bug

I'm still not able to reproduce the memory leak on my side...

What I've tried so far:

  • Manually load/unload soundfonts (using TOH which is 1.5Gb size) multiple times
  • Manually open/close MIDI client multiple times
  • Built a test MIDI client to open/close the MIDI device up to 10 times/sec

Only the last test gave something "noticeable" since memory increased by a couple of KB per second, but that was not a real usage situation; also, I expect that OS will free the extra memory once it reaches a valuable size (as you see in 2.0.1) but I haven't reached that point after about hour of tests.

Now I'd like to try that same soundfont; is it available online? Could you share a link to it?

Again, which is the MIDI client you're using? Could you share a link to it?

Re: 2.1.0 Reverb bug

The soundfont isn't available online yet, it's one I've been creating myself, currently 1.79 Gb in szie (1,886,204 KB, reported as 1841 MB in VMS).

I'm using WinAmp 5.666 to play my audio files, including MIDI. But I know it's old and hasn't been updated for years, so I could try another media player with the latest VMS version to see if the problem persists. But then it would be strange that it's only starting to happen with the newer VMS releases.

Re: 2.1.0 Reverb bug

I just tried a clean install of 2.2.1 and tried using Windows Media Player rather than WinAmp. As I played different midi files the memory useage as evident in Task Manager just continued to rise as I played new midi files, and didn't lower again when another was played. This time the reverb seemed to stay at it's default value no matter what number was typed in (the new value was remembered, but still reverb seemed audibly low).

I don't think it is related to my soundfont, which seems to load fine in editors. So I tried v2.2.1 with the Arachno Soundfont, which is a little under 150 MB. As I continued to play MIDIs memory useage continued to rise, I stopped after VMS had reached over 1.2 Gb RAM. Watching Task Manager, sometimes the memory useage did drop when playing a new file, but quickly jumped up again over what it was.
