Re: Windows can't recognize virtual synth

That link you gave was able to fix my problem. Turns out the issue was with synthesia, not VMS.

Thanks

Re: Windows can't recognize virtual synth

Forcing VMS to play through a specific device got VanBasco to work so now I just need to figure out how to get synthesia to recognize VMS.

I'll check out the thread you mentioned and see if I can get that to work now that I know VMS is working

As for the Synthesia issue, there's a thread here with the same issue: https://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/forum/thread/695

About VanBasco, if you see activity on VMS MIDI mixer then check for all of the volumes, both on MIDI Mixer and on Windows Audio mixer. Also check if you selected a specific analog output device on VMS.

Re: Windows can't recognize virtual synth

So nothing works for playing MIDI files. If I use windows player I just get an error and I tried vanbasco as well and I couldn't get any sound output. It looks like it at least works because it shows an output through the VMS mixer but I don't get any sound. I've tried every suggestion you've recommended but nothing works. There's clearly some other problem that's occuring because vanbasco works but I get no sound and when using synthesia it's not listed as an output. Currently the only thing that works for playing MIDI is synthesia using the GS wavetable

At this point I have no clue what the problem could possible be since everything looks like it should work. Might just give up and use the default wavetable since it at least works.

Re: Windows can't recognize virtual synth

You haven't wrote yet which player you are using to play MIDI... Is it Windows Media Player?

If yes, then you should configure VMS as default player both in VMS MIDI configuration and in CoolSoft MIDIMapper configurator (through its control panel applet).

I also suggest you to use a better player for MIDIs, like the well known VanBasco player. Please note that, being it an old (but still perfectly working) software, you need to run its setup as administrator even if not automatically asked for.

Re: Windows can't recognize virtual synth

So windows will only use the default GS wavetable synth and can't seem to recognize coolsoft. What I mean by this is that I can't get MIDI files to play through coolsynth even though its shown in the volume mixer and seems to be working. Another example would be I'm trying to use it for synthesia but it's not listed under the music output option, only the default GS wavetable.

I also downloaded the file you listed and that didn't seem to do anything

Re: Windows can't recognize virtual synth

What do you mean with "windows to use it instead of the default one"?

Windows MIDI Mapper was completely removed starting from Windows 8, so now each MIDI player must choose its device explicitly.

I wrote a blog post about this some time ago; it also contains a link to CoolSoft MIDIMapper, a free alternative to the now missing MIDIMapper: https://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/blog/2013/03/what-happened-midi-mappe...

Windows can't recognize virtual synth

I'm not sure what the problem is but I've installed virtual synth and from what I can tell everything is fine except I can't get windows to use it instead of the default one. I've tried changing some of the reg edit keys and that didn't work. Are there any other ways to try and force windows to use it?
