Probably just personal sensitivity. It isn't terrible but it feels... off. Squishy and sluggish.

Ultimately, hardware hacks saved the day. Essence STX II has an extra playback device for S/PIDF, so we just made a second MIDI device (so the first can still be used for file playback) and routed it to that playback device. Not much use for meatspace performance, but for OBS it works like a charm since the keyboard is linked to the hardware mixer we use for playback anyway. Hear the piano, stream VMS. Problem pretty much solved.
