Ok, that's fine.

To let PDFPropertyExtension work on Win10-ARM I should try to build a native ARM version of PDFPropertyExtension.dll but... without a real/virtual OS to test it on it's like a shot in the dark.

I've searched for a "virtual instance" online but there seems to be nothing available 🙄.

Do you mean they "show the requested metadata entries" thanks to PDFPropertyExtension?
Or do they have an internal/bundled PDF metadata parser?

Moved, thanks 👍

You're right.
I was trying to check if Explorer++ x86, which makes a large use of COM+ Explorer components, can work (emulated) on Win10-ARM.
If yes, it means that Win10-ARM contains x86 versions of Explorer COM+ components (like folder tree, file listview, right-click context menus, ...).
And so, being it an x86 process, it should be able to load the x86 version of PDFPropertyExtension.
Since almost every x86/x64 program has an Open/Save file dialog, and this dialog contains those COM+ components that could be subclassed y the program itself, I've supposed MS added an "emulated x86/x64 version" of them... 🙄

Maybe I was too optimistic.

Re: Issue on Mac M1 Parallels Win 11

Hello,

I tested in the meanwhile two other explorer programs and they show the requested metadata entries. It is only windows explorer which doesn't get the information.

I will test PDF property extension furthermore, if you are interested in finding a solution, but unfortunately for the program I found another solution with another program which can easily add the metadata AND shows it right the first time regarding PDF.

I really think that it is an ARM problem in the architecture of Win11 on the M1 using Parallels. Win11 has some bugs, as i.e. the search in Outlook is not possible any more... so maybe some bug exists which is interferring.

Best regards

Re: Issue on Mac M1 Parallels Win 11

Hi Claudio,

I do not think it's working the way you expect. x86/x64 support on native ARM Windows 10/11 just means that x86 and x64 apps can run and can use their own dlls of same architecture. It does not mean that native ARM executable files like Explorer can load and use x86/x64 in process dll files. So this is not a 32-bit vs.64-bit problem but ARM vs. x86/x64 problem. Similarly as x86 executable files can only load x86 dll files and x64 executable files can only load x64 dll files, ARM 64-bit executable files can only load ARM 64-bit dll files.

Re: Issue on Mac M1 Parallels Win 11

Sorry for the late reply, I've not forgotten this bug 😉.

There seems to be nothing wrong on the log you've sent (except for an issue on start menu link creation), so I was going to find a "Real ARM" device to test Win10-ARM on, but I've failed.
I've also searched for a virtual on-line instance... nothing.

Then I've tried to "emulate" it with QEMU on my x64 machine, but it's something awfully slow; the few that reported a success wrote it required days for it to be installed, and almost unusable once done.
I've downloaded multiple pre-built images but none of them was able to boot 😥.

Then I've found this article on The Verge: https://www.theverge.com/2021/11/16/22785453/microsoft-windows-10-on-arm...
It reports that x64 emulation won't reach Win10-ARM, meaning that it will only emulate x86 software.
x86+x64 emulation is only available in Win11 only.

As I said before, PDFPropertyExtension is an in-process DLL, loaded by explorer.exe which, on a 64bit OS, is a 64bit process.
If so, then PDFPropertyExtension can't work on Win10-ARM64 because it's not able to amulate x64 software but only x86.

To check if I'm right you should run the x86 version of explorer.exe, which is not possible.

Another way could be to run Explorer++, a free and portable "alternative Explorer".
No need to install it, just open the ZIP file and extract Explorer++.exe on the desktop.

  1. download Explorer++ (x86) from here: https://explorerplusplus.com/
NOTE: download the 1.4.0-beta2 x86 version, not the x64 one!
  2. extract Explorer++.exe on the desktop
  3. start Explorer++.exe, switch to Details view, add the required columns (Title, Author, ...)
  4. go to the folder where you have your PDFs

If you can now see the additional columns then my supposition is right: there's no x64 emulation on your ARM OS and there's nothing I can do until Microsoft brings x64 emulation to Win10-ARM (or you update to Win11).

Ehm... I could build a native ARM64 version of PDFPropertyExtension, but without a native system to test it on it's like a shot in the dark.

Please let me know the results of your test 👍

Re: Issue on Mac M1 Parallels Win 11

I wonder if something got wrong during setup (like a misdetected platform...).

Could you please send me the whole setup log?

  • uninstall PDFPropertyExtension
  • reboot Windows
  • install it again then, at the end of setup, right-click on the last log line and copy log to clipboard
  • paste log content here
