Midi Mixer and other thoughts

Hi,

A lot of people are asking for something like this: http://www.irishmidifiles.ie/images/mixer.1.jpg

Is a midi mixer implemented in most new and old sequencers. Pitch bend range can be considered too but I think all those midi messages controls should have been implemented in Van Basco itself in the first place but I think is possible in VMS.

Also the volume and limiter issue is due to midi file itself volume levels and the fact that most midis found on the web are done on old soundfont banks like the Creative/EMU 4 or 8 mb and newer bigger SF2 have different volume levels, and other differences, like Timbres of Heaven or Fluid 3. But an optional midi "analyzer/compressor" can be implemented in VMS, somehow, that edits the midi file before playing it and lets you save it, but thats probably a lot of programming. I usually edit midi files in Cubase 5 in a track by track basis to acomplish balanced volume levels. Anyway most midi files are horribly mixed and have many performance issues. Not everyone is a midi pro musician.

In the meantime, VSM2 is very promising, changing SF2 in a fly is great, sometimes causing crashes but very few on some SF, big ones specially.

Other ideas: VSM2 as VSTi... Output to ASIO... VST FX loading as it is done in Synthfont... A Midi editor (Piano roll and notes) perhaps?... A good midi file section for the forum?

Thank you for your excellent work. Grazie

Well, the first thought I had when I created VMS was: keep it simple.
I'm sure adding a mixer like that will scare a lot of poeple... ;)

That's not possible, and not because of the work needed to implement it.
VMS is a device driver, like a SoundBlaster, so it has no acces to the MIDI file at all.
It only receives MIDI commands sent by the MIDI client (your MIDI player) which is the only one that can access (and knows) the whole MIDI file being played.
Think about VMS like your external amplifier: you could it know if you're going to play a louder/quieter MP3?

Please report them here, I really need feedback on it.

These are also in my VMS2 TODO list, but I'd like to reach at least beta stage before adding such deep changes.

VMS is a device driver, I think these features are more suitable for a MIDI player.

Do you mean a section where people talk about MIDI technical details or a place where users could share MIDI files?
If the latter, I'm a bit scared of copyright jam that could happen when hosting multimedia files.

Thank you. Very interesting stuff indeed. Why not make it a Midi player with collaboration from Van basco and SF suffort from Polyphone? I ask too much :)

About midi files: I found some Roland midis, made for SC88 that are probably public doman. Is a good reference to create well balanced midis and to compare sounds. Thats how I created my sf, comparing it with Fluid 3 and Don´s.

Can be post it in some forum section.

And of course comparing it with the real thing:

I tried a lot of time to contact VanBasco author, always unsuccessfully.
Sadly the software seems dead and someone else, don't know who, is keeping the website alive.

It's still, IMHO, a great piece of software that still works great under the latest windows versions.
Setup just need a quick fix (admin requirements for UAC compliance) and I offered my help for it, but nobody replied.

Thanks for your reply.

One suggestion, someone at kvr site may now about van basco author or any other progammer involved in new midi players.
They are probably the more active computer musician website this days.
