I am frustrated & tired

Hello my name is greg. I am a singer, and i like to sequence my own background music. I use anvil studios, but i would like to avoid the poor sound quality of microsoft wavetable synthesizer. I downloaded your synthesizer and the ultimate soundfont package. However, following your instructions and anvils instructions is futile.some instructions are not possible for me to follow. Options do not exist or work for some reason. I am not all that tech savy. Please help explain how i can access all the voices in the sound font package. Thank you for your time. Have a great day.

I'm not an Anvil user, so I can't help on that.

Were you able to install VMS, configure a SoundFont file and play a MIDI with your preferred MIDI player (like Windows Media Player)?
Or is the problem related to Anvil?

it was playing but now it wont play at all, anvil program says unknown error. i give up. uninstalling everything thank you anyway. things like this frustrate me, and cause me a great deal of anxiety. i am financially challenged and subsequently do not have the money to spend thousands of dollars for equipment and software. have a great day!

Anvil-studio or any other software cannot see inside the soundfont because you use soundfont with an intermediary software.

You need to know in which order Soundfont's instruments are in order. Or if a PDF or TXT came with soundfont, you should check it out here.
For example: Bank: 012-Patch: 074

Some software may sometimes conflict with VMS.
it can be solved as follows: Exit Anvil, and click the system tray and exit VMS.
Restart Anvil. Usually this solves the problem.

Because VMS is free, it doesn't make an impact on your budget.
But Anvil's add-ons may upset you.
There are other free software. Try them out.

Give it another chance :)

Re: I am frustrated & tired

I don't think I'd ever tried it before, and the price was right, so I downloaded Anvil Studio.  Playing around with Anvil Studio made me frustrated and tired.  There is nothing intuitive about the interface except that the triangular button plays a file.  Absolutely ghastly.  I quickly racked up a mental list of things that do not work like I think they should, or do not work like the program's authors think they should.  I'll refrain from posting it all here, but I'd like to point out that it should not take an experienced computer afficionado like myself 10+ minutes to figure out how to configure the MIDI output device...let alone some convoluted scheme to have more than one output device active at a time (thanks, VMS!).

I can't recommend a specific MIDI sequencer program because the one I like to use is old and you can't get it anymore (and it wasn't free).  There might be better ones than the one I like out there now, but I haven't had the patience to track them down (pun intended).  But, there has to be something better than Anvil Studio out there for little to no cost.  Please don't blame VirtualMIDISynth for what may be the shortcomings of software such as Anvil Studio.

Also keep in mind that Anvil Studio (as far as MIDI is concerned) and most MIDI software, understand the General MIDI standard.  That standard defines specific instrument patches at specific patch numbers, as well as specific percussion sounds at specific percussion notes.  If you are using sound fonts that adhere or mimic that standard, that's fine.  Once you start using sound fonts (etc.) that stray from that standard, you get into territory that assigns you the responsability to know what you're doing.  A "package" (a sound font?) that has 1200 different sounds is definitely beyond the General MIDI standard.  It looks to me like Anvil Studio makes it difficult (if not impossible) to quickly program a specific patch to play in a MIDI file—you must manually configure a custom bank/patch library first.  Not a casual procedure if 1200 different patches are involved.  Several of the highest-quaility sound fonts I use are not General MIDI compliant; many instrument-specific (high-quality) sound fonts will not be.  Don't be afraid to use non-GM sound fonts... just learn how to select the patches you want.  Again, Anvil Studio's solution doesn't let you do this very easily, and its desire to try and hold your hand at every opportunity actually makes it harder to use.

I am sorry. I did not mean to blame vms for anything. it just appears that coolsoft is not compatible with anvil. Anvil came with a lifetime license.i purchased it when I had a decent income. Vms has been uninstalled, and I don't see myself reinstalling it.

It works just fine for me.  VitualMIDISynth is the only MIDI synthesizer I use on my main machine, which is where I installed Anvil Studio.  Keep in mind I installed the most-current 64-bit version of Anvil Studio, and without any paid add-ons that you apparently have.

I understand you have given up on VMS, which is fine, but this isn't a life or death issue worth getting so frustrated and tired over.  Error messages from Anvil Studio you cannot figure out should be directed at their support system.  I can totally empathzie with you becoming frustrated and tired because of Anvil Studio, because I sure did not enjoy using it.  Perhaps others will chime in here on their favorite sequencers to use.  You can try to find another MIDI sequencer yourself, but that may require time, patience, and money you don't want to spend.    VMS has never given me big hassles, it just works.

Care to enlighten us about the sound font you were trying to use with the 1200 sounds?  I might want to check it out.

Joseph
