Viruses/Trojans

Coolsoft MIDIMapper contains the SEVERE Trojan: win32/Wacatac.C!ml.

Please BOTHER to run virus scans on your programs and servers regularly (weekly, or daily using real-time protection) Recommended programs are McAfee or Kaspersky (preferable) before you upload programs.

Though you have a great reputation for great programs, the internet has listed your website as dangerous and blocks downloads because of the viruses and trojans that are now coming with your programs.

I haven't added it on purpose, I swear ;) They are false positives.

Do you really think that, after more than 30 years in the IT, I need to be tought how to protect myself and my work? Come on, be seriuos...

Each file available on my website is scanned by VirusTotal and, to be completely transparent, next to each download block users can find a direct link to VirusTotal analysis results.
Now make your choice:

  • I've added viruses to my software on purpose (which I don't) but I've also cheated myself by publishing a direct link that proves I'm guilty
  • reported analysis contains some false positives I can't (or can hardly) manage

Thanks for picking up 2 names out of the top ten list of AV vendors.
I could name more than other 20 better (but less famous) ones, IMHO.
At work I (personally) prefer Avast, which has a Cloud based management console with no need for a central (own) server and protects the hundreds clients network I manage...

No, they're not! (this is the meaning of false positive)
Virus scan is basically a pattern-based analysis, which must be fast and performant to avoid making the system awfully slow.

The most false-postive affected of my programs are VirtualMIDISynth and MIDIMapper.
Why? Because they need to configure themselves like (but they aren't) system drivers, and copy files to system folders like System32.
This triggers most of the false-positive reports I've had till now.

I've already wrote my thoughts here; to resume it, big companies sign their programs and ask (threat?) AV vendors to consider them as safe.
That's ok because... can you wonder what'll happen if an AV blocks some critical OS file? Or blocks a critical driver leading to unbootable OS?
It'll be expensive for an AV vendor to have a legal dispute with such a big company; but what about small developers?
They (like me) don't have time/money/resources to fight this battle.

So, finally, the choice is up to you: if you consider VirusTotal 5/70 report as suspicious then... don't download and install my software.
Maybe next build will be more lucky and won't be detected as suspicious (I've also seen different reports on 2 different builds/packaging of the same source code...).

I did not send you the above notes about MIDImapper.
