21 Jun 2011 UPDATE

This version is outdated and not available anymore.
See here for the latest version.

As a long time Aardwark user, now that Firefox 4 is out I'm still missing a version of it that works with FF4.

Well, the original Aardvark 3.0 works perfectly in FF4 but it can't be installed because its manifest (a file inside the addin that says FF which versions that addin is compatible with) reports FF 3.6.* as max version. Editing this info is not so difficult, but some inexperienced users can't do it.

Here you are, download a version of Aardvark working for FF4 here. (See above for the newer version.)
The only change I made, as said, is to allow it to be installed in FF4 and nothing else.

NOTE: addon won't install directly, you must save it to your computer then drag&drop it to FF addons page manually.
Or better:

  • Download the .xpi file to a folder on your computer
  • Open Firefox 4, click on the top-left orange Firefox button, then choose add-ons
  • Click on the button next to the up-right search box (with a gear image)
  • Choose install addon from file and select the previously downloaded .xpi file

Well, I'm such an inexperienced user, not ale to change thing in a way that Aardvark will run in FF4.
I'm even not capable of: "then drag&drop it to FF addons page manually." How to?

  • Download the .xpi file to your desktop
  • Open Firefox 4, click on the top-left orange Firefox button, then choose add-ons
  • Click on the button next to the up-right search box (with a gear image)
  • Choose install addon from file and select the downloaded .xpi file

That's all!

I delayed updating my desktop to FF4, largely because I use Aardvark extensively on it. I hadn't gotten around to hacking the code yet and thank you for doing so. I installed it on my desktop and it looks just like it always did and works as well as ever. Thanks much for taking the time and for passing this along to the Mozilla community.

Well, mine is the smallest part of the whole work...
Thank you for taking the time to thank me ;)

...I really need Aardvark!

Deiv.

I dont know who to thank, but i love you, it works!!

Offtopic: just to say thanks for the FileboxExtender fix.   http://www.hyperionics.com/files/index.asp :)

You're welcome wink

Thank you very much for modifiying the xpi file of Aardwark,

I was, like you, looking for a solution and you did it!

best regards
Patrice (Firefox 64bits 4.0.1, OpenSuse 11.3 64bits, running on dell Latitud D830)

i very pleasant. aardvark is the important one for web design...

You seem to know if it would work or if it's not possible.
Thanks in advance
Paul

Take a look to this addin: HackTheWeb.

It has the same features of Aardvark and a lot more.
