Actually VMS understands GM/GM2/GS/XG SysEx messages and send them to the underlying BASS libs.
And also, BASS libraries are supposet to work with both GM2 and XG, AFAIK.
Could you be more specific on what's not working on your side?

Apparently, drums are not changing to the XG compatible bank when playing a XG/GS song with the Giant Soundfont.
Also, it's as if this synth ignores the bank switch feature. (examples: http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/gameboy/gsbattlexg.mid/ and http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/snes/smwbow.mid, the former, the Square Lead instruments are supposed to sound unique, and the latter, the "waves of the sea" sound's supposed to be thunderclaps {and I doubt that the latter's XG music}).
Link to soundfont (in case anyone wants to try it out): http://giantsoundfont.npage.de/
